The Dutch conductor Marco Bons comes from a musical family and played the violin and piano from an early age. His father Koos Bons was a nationally renowned organist and pianist.

 

As a professionally trained violinist, Marco played in various professional orchestras, where he could experience the functioning of an orchestra and conductor from the position of an orchestra musician.

 

Marco was trained as an orchestra conductor at the Conservatory of Utrecht with Kenneth Montgomery, David Porcelein and Jurjen Hempel. He followed choral conducting with Krijn Koetsveld.

For more practical experience and musical inspiration, he actively participated in many conducting master classes, including with Hiroyuki Iwaki, Sergiu Celibidache, Antoni Ros Marbà, Zoltan Pesko, Peter Eötvös, Rolf Reuter, Janos Fürst, Uros Lajovic and Edo de Waart.

 

Marco has won several prizes at international conducting competitions. As a result of his performances at conducting competitions and masterclasses, he was active in Germany with the former Westfälisches Sinfonie Orchester, the Jenaer Philharmonie, the Philharmonic Orchestra Cottbus and the Südwestdeutsche Philharmonie, in the Czech Republic the Philharmonic Orchestra of Hradec Kralove, in Hungary the Savaria Symphony Orchestra and in Romania the opera of Cluj-Napoca.

In 2009 he won first prize at the Blue Danube Opera Conducting Competition in Burgas (Bulgaria) and in 2015 he won second prize at the Atlantic Coast Festival conducting competition in Portugal.

He was a regular guest in Eastern Europe for conductings at the opera houses of Bucharest, Belgrade, Bratislava, Banska Bystrica (Slovakia) and Rousse (Bulgaria).

 

In the Netherlands, his affinity with singing and opera is reflected in the opera company “Belcanto” in Velsen and the “Ropera aan de Maas” in Rotterdam. In 2015 he led the musical part in the opera/theatre pastiche “Feijenoord, Dé Opera” in De Kuip in Rotterdam. Mozart's Idomeneo is scheduled for 2022.

 

He owes his extensive orchestral repertoire knowledge and conducting experience to the excellent Chamber Orchestra “Utrechtse Muziekacademie” (UMA) to which he has been associated since its foundation. The UMA is now known for its challenging programming where known but also unknown repertoire is not avoided. This orchestra performed Wagner's Walküre in a spectacularly large line-up, but also participated in the series of scenic performances of the opera Carmen by Bizet, Verdi's Macbeth and Aida in collaboration with "Belcanto" Velsen. In the fall of 2021, these companies staged Puccini's Turandot.

The 25th anniversary of the UMA was celebrated in 2019 with performances of Beethoven's Ninth Symphony and Brahms' Schicksalslied with Vocal Ensemble Franscanti and Concerto Cherise.

 

In The Hague, the symphony orchestra “Carpe Diem” offers the opportunity to intensively rehearse and perform the great classical and romantic repertoire.

The excellent wind ensemble “La Spiritata” from Nijmegen focuses on chamber music repertoire and ensemble culture.

 

At the end of 2007 chamber orchestra “Camerata Terra Reno” was created on its own initiative. There are regular performances both independently and in combination with choirs . The concert series on the Op Hodenpijl estate was also born at the same time as the Camerata Terra Reno ensemble. Marco takes care of the programming for the concerts on every third Sunday of the month.

In Nederland komt zijn affiniteit met zang en opera tot uiting bij het operagezelschap “Belcanto” te Velsen en de “Ropera aan de Maas” te Rotterdam. In 2015 leidde hij het muzikale aandeel in de opera/theater pastiche “Feijenoord, Dé Opera” in De Kuip te Rotterdam. In 2022 staat Mozart’s Idomeneo gepland.

 

Zijn omvangrijke orkestrale repertoirekennis en dirigeerervaring heeft hij mede te danken aan het uitstekende Kamerorkest “Utrechtse Muziekacademie”(UMA) waar hij sinds de oprichting aan verbonden is. De UMA is inmiddels bekend om de uitdagende programmering waar  bekend maar juist ook onbekend repertoire niet uit de weg wordt gegaan. Dit orkest vertolkte in een spectaculair grote bezetting  Wagner’s  Walküre, maar werkte ook mee aan onder andere de reeks scenische voorstellingen van de opera Carmen van Bizet, Verdi’s Macbeth en Aida in samenwerking met “Belcanto” Velsen. Najaar 2021 brachten  deze gezelschappen Puccini’s Turandot op de planken.

Het 25 jarig bestaan van de UMA werd in 2019 gevierd met uitvoeringen van de Negende Symfonie van Beethoven en Brahms’Schicksalslied met Vocaal Ensemble Franscanti en Concerto Cherise.

 

In Den Haag biedt symfonie-orkest “Carpe Diem” de mogelijkheden om het grote klassieke en romantische repertoire intensief te repeteren en uit te voeren.

Bij het uitstekende blazersensemble “La Spiritata” uit Nijmegen ligt het accent op kamermuziekrepertoire en ensemblecultuur.

 

Op eigen  initiatief ontstond eind 2007 kamerorkest “Camerata Terra Reno”. Zowel zelfstandig als in combinatie met koren vinden er regelmatig optredens plaats . Tegelijk met ensemble Camerata Terra Reno werd ook de concertserie op het landgoed Op Hodenpijl geboren. Marco verzorgt daar de programmering voor de concerten op elke derde zondag van de maand.
